Patricia Barber stammt aus Chicago, wo sie auch heute noch – wenn sie nicht gerade auf Tour ist – jeden Montag im legendären Club Green Mill auftritt. Nach Studien der Klassischen Musik und der Psychologie entschied sie sich 1984 doch, dem Weg ihres früh verstorbenen Vaters zu folgen und der eher brotlosen Kunst der Jazzmusikerin nachzugehen. Fünf Tage pro Woche trat sie in dem winzigen Chicagoer Club Gold Star Sardine Bar auf, und das brachte sie auf die nationale Jazz-Landkarte. Ihr Ruf verbreitete sich schnell und nachhaltig unter Kennern und führte zu Auftritten vom Chicago Jazz Festival (1988) bis zum North Sea Jazz Festival (1989) und zu ihrem ersten Plattendeal. Trotzdem machte sie noch ihren Master als Jazzpädagogin und gibt bis heute international masterclasses. Nach mehreren Platten für das kleine Premonition label, die sich zum Teil mehr als hundertausendfach verkauften und gerade erst einen Grammy für Patricia’s CD Modern Cool erhielten, nahm das Blue Note Label sie unter Vertrag, für das sie unter anderem Gedichte des Römischen Dichters Ovid bearbeitete und vertonte (CD Mythology). Ihre neueste CD Smash  ist gerade im Januar 2013 beim Label Concord erschienen.

“Supreme Dicks is an experimental rock group formed in 1984 in Amherst, Massachussetts by Jon Shere, Steve Shavel and Danny Oxenberg. Their glorious music combines dissonant lo-fi noise, avant-garde, and psychedelic sounds to warped song structures. Rising out of the same scene that produced Dinosaur Jr, Supreme Dicks were vital contributors to the lo-fi and avant garde genres. The band’s constantly revolving line-up (Lou Barlow was a Dick now and again) centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, and Jim Spring, whose psychedelic-yet-twangy brand of rock’n’roll came out of the band’s roots at Hampshire College in the Reagan era. —–

avantgarde-rock-kollektiv, das seit 1984 minimalistisch verschrobene
songs mit riff-hypnose behandelt und nach 17jähriger abstinenz mal

LINE UP   Martin Speicher (sax, cl), Kassel • Hainer Wörmann (git), Bremen  • Georg Wolf (kontra-b), Giessen

Der Kritiker Werner Merz hat die künstlerische Übereinstimmung und das Zusammenspiel von Martin Speicher und Georg Wolf als „geradezu telepatische Empathie“ bezeichnet. Seit 20 Jahren arbeiten die beiden zusammen: ob energetische oder aufs Minimum reduzierte Spielweisen, ob raue Texturen, schroffe Wechsel oder weit ausholende Flächen, das Vokabular ihrer Improvisationen ist weit entwickelt. Der Bremer Gitarrist Hainer Wörmann wird sich in diesen musikalischen Kosmos einerseits einbringen, andererseits sein eigenes Vokabular – auch als Störung – produktiv machen.

Die beiden Argentinier Daniel Almada und Martin Iannaccone sind mit ihrer Band Tango Crash von Beginn an konsequent ihren eigenen Weg im Tango gegangen. Mit ihrer Mischung aus Tango, Jazz und zeitgenössischer elektronischer Musik waren sie Pioniere des elektronischen Tango. Nach dem mit dem Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik ausgezeichneten dritten Album mit dem Titel „Baila Querida“ (Tanz, meine Liebe) ist ihr aktuelles Album „Accidente de Tango“ (Tango-Unfall) ein klares Statement, dass Tango weitaus mehr als Tanzmusik ist.

Wooden Wand is one moniker of singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth, who has recorded under his given name as well as the name WAND. Having over 100 releases from proper albums to handmade CDRs to limited-edition vinyl, Toth is by all accounts an astoundingly prolific artist. The style of music recorded by Toth and his many incarnations has drawn on a variety of both conventional and experimental folk and rock influences, including psych folk, acid folk, freak-folk, free folk, and indie. Though he was a significant player in the New Weird America trend of the early- to mid-2000s (decade) along with Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, Joanna Newsom, and collaborators The Vanishing Voice, Toth has been difficult to pigeonhole in one genre; recent releases have been identified as acid-folk, free-jazz, outlaw country, and country-tinged rock.

Nach ihren Universitätsabschlüssen in Pädagogik und Blockflöte in Wien studierte Bernadette Zeilinger in Basel bei Fred Frith und Alfred Zimmerlin Improvisation und absolvierte ihr Masterkonzert in spezialisierter Performance mit Auszeichnung. Eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für sie ist das Spielen mit vielen verschiedenen MusikerInnen im Rahmen ihrer internationalen Konzerttätigkeit.

His specific approach to jazz and his poetic, very authentic style have made trumpet player Eric Vloeimans a focal point not only on the Dutch jazz scene, but well beyond. Oliver’s Cinema is his new trio. Teaming up with cellist Jörg Brinkmann and accordion player Tuur Florizoone, Vloeimann plays music that resembles film music in that it emotionally stirs up the listener in the most positive way and evokes imagery and reminiscences.
